Bride to Be

Today my bridesmaids and close friends surprised me with a beautiful bridal shower. Everything was absolutely stunning, and I wanted to share a few pictures from the afternoon. My bridesmaids, Kirsten & Jenna are responsible for the beautiful decorations. The whole backyard smelled like fresh eucalyptus. A special thanks to my sister and maid of honor, Chloe for putting all of this together! And to miss Sophie for the desserts and Emily for helping me out with pictures for the day!

If you follow me on Instagram, no doubt you've been flooded with countless shots from my recent road trip. Well, I'm here to flood you with more! We didn't go too far up the coast, but there is still so much to see in the distance we covered. This is the little beach that was right across from our hotel.

Bean Coffee Roasters

This Summer has been a lot more relaxed than I expected. I've had a lot of time, maybe a little too much, to work on building my photography business, which is always great. The only problem  is I find myself spending days working from home, and neglecting a social life. Jenna and I finally had the chance to meet up for coffee today, and it was so nice to sit down with a friend, drink up a latte and enjoy a laid back vibe. This is a new coffee house that just opened locally, and it did not disappoint.

I've been incorporating this army green maxi from Romwe into my outfits a lot lately. Since I went to uni, I've become a jeans kind of gal, but occasionally I find a piece like this one that is effortless to wear, and matches with everything. Army green is my love lately - probably attributed to my fiancĂ© ;) What can I say? I'm impressionable.

What to Wear: Engagement Sessions

July 21, 2016

Black Evening Dress

One of the number one questions I am asked as a portrait photographer is, "What should I wear?" Although it may seem trivial, clothing choice for a session drastically affects the outcome in the final images. Today I want to talk about what to wear for engagement sessions. On the whole my first recommendation is to stay away from bright colors. Wearing darker, muted tones draws the eye to the subject. Darker colors are also a lot more timeless, so you can avoid an outdated look years down the road.

On the same token, some lovely ladies don't want their pictures to look moody and dramatic. Perhaps you tend to go for lighter shades in your wardrobe, and you'd like to keep the session in tune with your personal style. I feel you, Girl! If you really want to incorporate color, I highly recommend pastels, off white, blush or champagne. These colors will air on the trendy side, so be aware of this.

On that note, make sure your personal style is reflected in the session. Remember, this is about capturing photos of you and your sweetheart - you want these pictures to embody you as a couple! It's all about capturing the love you share, and who you are as individuals. At the end of the day, you need to love these pictures, and you won't be happy with the outcome if you feel like you allowed rules to get in the way of being yourself.

When deciding what to wear for your engagement session, keep the overall feel of the session in mind. Are you going to be posing at a theme park? Or in a forest? Knowing your background will aid you in deciding whether you should go for a long evening dress, or opt for a casual tee and a pair of jeans. And on that note, I'm just going to say - this evening dress from Sherry London would be so gorgeous with a flower crown for a forest engagement.

Coordinate, don't match! I can't stress this one enough. Unless you want to do something cute like my sister and her boyfriend, and wear matching football jerseys for a shot or two, avoid straight up matching. It's shouts outdated, and should just be avoided, end of story. However, coordinating is always welcome! My fiance and I had these pictures taken a few months ago, and we opted to wear outfits that included similar colors, but also maintained visual interest with varying textures and different light tones.

Don't limit yourself based on body type! There are so many stunning shapes and sizes that should be celebrated. If you wear plus size, don't be afraid to wear something fun. Be as bold as you are beautiful. Sport a chic pair of skinnies, or a daring red evening dress. The options are limitless!

The most important thing to remember is to relax, have fun and be yourself! It's an exciting time in your life, and these beautiful pictures will last through the years as a reminder of your love for each other.

The Sawdust Festival

July 18, 2016

For years my mom has told my sister and I about the sawdust art festival. As a girl I had notions of a quaint, renaissance town. Years later, we finally got the chance to take a walk around and check it out.  There's something really warm and romantic about the rows of lit wooden shops. Each one is custom built and unique to the artist. The experience gives you a really beautiful, insiders view into the uniqueness and brilliance of each designer. One of the things I loved the most was the eclectic array of diversity between pieces and concepts. We've become so accustomed to cookie-cutter. Sometimes it's nice to change perspective and design with an open mind oriented towards decorating with what you love, or what catches your eye, rather than following trends that are common and overdone.
