One of the number one questions I am asked as a portrait photographer is, "What should I wear?" Although it may seem trivial, clothing choice for a session drastically affects the outcome in the final images. Today I want to talk about what to wear for engagement sessions. On the whole my first recommendation is to stay away from bright colors. Wearing darker, muted tones draws the eye to the subject. Darker colors are also a lot more timeless, so you can avoid an outdated look years down the road.
On the same token, some lovely ladies don't want their pictures to look moody and dramatic. Perhaps you tend to go for lighter shades in your wardrobe, and you'd like to keep the session in tune with your personal style. I feel you, Girl! If you really want to incorporate color, I highly recommend pastels, off white, blush or champagne. These colors will air on the trendy side, so be aware of this.

On that note, make sure your personal style is reflected in the session. Remember, this is about capturing photos of you and your sweetheart - you want these pictures to embody you as a couple! It's all about capturing the love you share, and who you are as individuals. At the end of the day, you need to love these pictures, and you won't be happy with the outcome if you feel like you allowed rules to get in the way of being yourself.
When deciding what to wear for your engagement session, keep the overall feel of the session in mind. Are you going to be posing at a theme park? Or in a forest? Knowing your background will aid you in deciding whether you should go for a long evening dress, or opt for a casual tee and a pair of jeans. And on that note, I'm just going to say - this evening dress from Sherry London would be so gorgeous with a flower crown for a forest engagement.

Coordinate, don't match! I can't stress this one enough. Unless you want to do something cute like my sister and her boyfriend, and wear matching football jerseys for a shot or two, avoid straight up matching. It's shouts outdated, and should just be avoided, end of story. However, coordinating is always welcome! My fiance and I had these pictures taken a few months ago, and we opted to wear outfits that included similar colors, but also maintained visual interest with varying textures and different light tones.
Don't limit yourself based on body type! There are so many stunning shapes and sizes that should be celebrated. If you wear plus size, don't be afraid to wear something fun. Be as bold as you are beautiful. Sport a chic pair of skinnies, or a daring red evening dress. The options are limitless!

The most important thing to remember is to relax, have fun and be yourself! It's an exciting time in your life, and these beautiful pictures will last through the years as a reminder of your love for each other.
